The books and other online materials do not provide sufficient basic information for learning wedding photography. They offer very little information on how to setup the lights and shoot a wedding. A wedding photographer have to depend a lot on the real light, you won’t get studio lighting for a wedding. You will have to learn about on-camera flash photography for indoors. The awareness of setting up flash at F8 or F11 will give you better focus.
You cannot make excuses for making mistakes on wedding photographs. You will have to spend a lot of time for preparing practicing before a wedding. You can refer to the manuals or books for handling your camera. Spend as much as time possible for practicing photo sessions. Note down the information about exposure of your camera. Review the photos taken during the practice sessions and note the settings that work best. Practice those setting till you can do it quickly. On a wedding day you will have to make fast decisions on the shots.
There will be small details that can break your exposures and ruin you reputation. You should visit the venue and study the conditions there to get prepared. The light available in the church may not be sufficient for taking photos. The sunlight or a cloudy day can make the difference in the photographs. Learn the way in which your camera meter responds and take notes. A camera with 800 speed film will work suitably for a wedding. Always carry a tripod, extra flashes, batteries and lenses. You can use almost all types of films for shooting a wedding. But professional grade films like Kodak and Fuji are better for wedding photography. They have less contrast and can provide more details. The details of the white wedding dress and black tuxedo have to be projected in a wedding photograph. You can make the prints as large as you need. But as the size increases the clarity decreases. Using digital camera for wedding photography would be a better option.
